For over four decades, Mortenson Construction has been at the heart of Denver’s architectural evolution. Since its arrival in 1981, the family-owned company has played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s skyline, constructing over 700 structures that serve as pillars of community, culture, and innovation.
In 2025, Mortenson launched a new chapter with the opening of its Denver headquarters at 3083 Walnut Street in the RiNo Art District. Known for its vibrant street murals and creative energy, RiNo provided the perfect backdrop for a bold artistic statement. Mortenson’s architects intentionally left a large, blank cement wall as an open canvas for a local artist to transform.
Pat Milbery’s creation for Mortenson Construction is a visual tribute to the company’s legacy, capturing some of Denver’s most iconic landmarks built by Mortenson over the years. Milbery put his own artistic spin on representations of Coors Field, Ball Arena, the Colorado Judicial Center, the Westin Hotel at Denver International Airport, the Denver Art Museum, and the National Jewish Health hospital. Arranged in chronological order, these landmarks ascend the wall, symbolizing the city’s architectural evolution.
The mural seamlessly blends these structures into Denver’s natural beauty, weaving in elements like the Indian paintbrush flower, magpie birds, mountains, and sunshine to honor the landscapes that make Colorado unique.
Beyond honoring Denver’s built environment, the mural also reflects Mortenson’s commitment to sustainability. Milbery incorporates depictions of windmills and solar panels in the piece, highlighting Mortenson’s investment in renewable energy infrastructure across the U.S.
At the center of the mural is an energy field that rises up the spine of the building, culminating in Milbery’s signature Open Heart symbol. This powerful imagery represents Mortenson’s ethos—building with heart, purpose, and a deep commitment to the people of Denver. More than just a construction company, Mortenson is a family-driven enterprise that prioritizes its employees, the community, and the collective experience of the city.
